Hello, I guess everyone must be in bed as I am the only one on here  Just wanted a bit if advice about a couple of the areas I am looking at and which, as a funky (or so I like to think!!) thirtysomething married but childless would best suit. I like to drink out around 3 times a week but also appreciate a bit of peace & quiet (but not dead as a dodo!) 1) Eltham-what's the general vibe?, shops?, going out? (not expecting clubs but one nice bar would be great), is it true that direct train to city only takes around half an hour? (also montmorency, diamond creek..) 2) Mornington-I love the look of the beach and general area & read somewhere that the main populus is age bracket 29-39 so must be quite lively? Is it possible to find admin type office jobs around here or would I still need to trek into CBD? I would welcome positives and negatives re both areas and any other suggestions. Thanks! Jules |

Eltham is established suburban. It's on the edge of areas which are very country -and there's lots of bush blocks- for me its actually what I think most Brits want in a move to Australia and moreorless what they expect Australia to be. It looks very close to the city say compared to the SE and must surely score well here but the roads choke quickly in the rush hours. Mornington - the beach - the bay etc. I expect most people to like this place. I'm more of a bush/hills person than a beach person so Eltham gets my nod - but I would live a bit out of Eltham. Both desirable areas and they will never go backwards. |

Any suburb to the N/E like Yarambat, Panton Hills, Diamond Creek, Hurstbridge. But frankly many people would prefer Eltham or a bush block in Eltham itself if they didn't want the maintenance of a bigger block (which I would go for). I'm trying to speak for popular opinion! |

Have done both! When first arrived lived in Diamond Creek for 8 mnths then moved to Mount Eliza. Find down here is more like the Aus I imagined - altho' further from city by about 30-45 mins have everything we need down here (Chadstone -shopping mecca also closer) - also less Power lines! The beach is at the bottom of the road , instead of an hour and 1/2 drive- which means you don't have to plan an expedition and stay all day. The block sizes are bigger , houses are cheaper. Wineries/rolling hills (Red Hill) still only 5 mins away. Eltham is lovely tho' - not much nightlife (go into city) - find there's more in Mornington! Just found up there was Mel commuter belt , where as down here is more of a lifestyle. You really need to see both and then its down to what you feel is right for you. Good Luck!! |

Another suburb that gets overlooked is Lower Plenty. It's right next to Eltham, it has great access to the freeway and it's got a nice range of properties for every buyer. It probably has that more Australian bush feel about it than Eltham. Cheers |

We live in Mount Eliza which is a lovely village outside of Mornington. The area is great but.................. The only way to find out if you like an area is to do the leg work on the ground. You can only find out for yourselves. The forums are a great place for pointers, but you really don't know what a place is like until you have seen it. We first stayed in Berwick which was not for us, yet there are many on this forum that love the place. The most important this is to enjoy the adventure and go with the flow. |

We wanted commutability, and having liked Eltham ended up settling in neighbouring Warrandyte which we just love. On the edge of bushy 'green wedge', wiht the Yarra river running through the heart of it, and more of a community feel than Eltham. If you like pub chatty social drinking rather than music/clubby drinking, its a nice place to be. Eltham is nearest station - 40mins into the city, although they have just changed some of the timetables, and not sure what the impact is. However, if you don't need to get to the city and you like the beach, Mornington is probably your place to be. |
