 My little boy is 5 in Feb 08. When will he start school? Does he start school the year he is 6 ie. Feb 09? Is pre school available for all children before this, or is there private provision. Is Kindy available full time? I teach in a prep school at the moment. My son is in his last year of the nursery - full time. He would start in reception in Sept this year (2007) Any advice - pleeese! We land in Melbourne on 2/08/07 Bex |

The school will probably will ask you to wait until Jan 08 and then he would go into Prep. We think they probably break up in November for Summer holidays. My advise would be to locate a Primary school in the area you plan on moving too and just email them. That's what we did. Son #2 is in Year 1, he turned 6 in April. It's quite unusual for someone that young to be in Year 1. He would be in Prep if he was Australian, but he had already spent a year in UK Year 1 and Prep would be a big step back for him. |

Hi, the cut off date in Victoria is 30th April. My daughter is 5 on April 2nd 2008, she's in 4 year old Kinder at the moment and will be starting school in January 08. So your son will be able to start school in Jan 08 if you want him too. It seems quite common to defer children, especially boys, I've met a lot of mums with children the same age as my daughter who are keeping their child at kinder until 2009. My daughter seems ready for school even though she'll be one of the youngest in her year. |

yeah, I guess it's just personal preference. I say get them in "big" school as soon as possible. Throw them in the deep end and watch them swim. The sooner they learn there is no such thing as a free lunch, the sooner they will be out to work and paying for their rent  Out of interest does anyone have any tips on employment agencies specialising in the under 10's ? I heard that there is good money to be made in Pest Control. Small, nimble, people are always good at making it under the floor boards :noooooo: |

Our youngest daughter is the youngest in her grade. Her birthday is 12th April, two weeks before the cut off point. We didn't hold her back and she is doing well and is very settled into school. At the end of the day each child is different and where some might be more than ready to start school, others may not. The best bet is to wait until you know where you will be living and then visit the primary school of your choice with your child and go from there. |

Hi Bex I've just been reading your post and the replies with interest. My little boy is also 5 in Feb. 08 and I was a little unsure whether he would start primary school next year or the year after. He loves it at nursery here and I think when we get to Oz it will be a case of getting him in to kindy and see how things go from there. Debb |

He should start Prep next year. They have to be 5 by 30th April in the year that they start, if that makes any sense :) |
