We currently have a btinternet email address which is web based as well as pop3. Does anyone know when we cancel the bt line before we leave the UK can we still use the btinternet email address until we set up a new in Oz or do they cancel it when you stop paying the line rental?

Really don't want to speak to Indian call centre again!!

Thanks

Sharon

PS what did everyone else do?

Hi Sharon,

Think it very much depends on the provider. In our case, I had two email accounts in the UK - a Blueyonder (Telewest Cable Co) and Freeserve. The moment we cancelled our cable TV (which also included broadband) we lost our email accounts, complete with all emails in them  . However, the Freeserve account was still available via Web Mail so long as I logged in at least once every 60 or 90 days.
I would recommend getting an account here and/or creating a 'global' email account such as Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.

Cheers,

Simon

Hi
We had a Tiscali broadband account with email that you could access from their website but that was closed when we cancelled the broadband (luckily realised just in time), so I would recommend transferring anything you want to keep, all you contacts etc and setting up a new address.

We had two email addresses - one with NTL who supplied our broadband and one with Virgin (who we used for dial up before we got broadband) - we still receive emails on both addresses - NTL was cancelled 10 months ago and virgin was cancelled a few years ago!!

Greetings Chapmans,

The answer kind of relates to your planned activities. Are you intending on staying in Australia permanently or might you eventually move home or move on elsewhere ?

Quick and Simple Solution - GMail

Open a Google GMail Account which will provide you with secure email, loads of space as well as Web and POP3 access for use with Outlook and other Email clients.

Simple to setup, permanent and won't cause you problems when you move about between suppliers/ISPs and/or countries.

Other More Permanent Solutions

You might want to consider setting up a proper independent email and/or service from a supplier like GoDaddy.com. There are several vendors out there offering these services and they are usually quite reliable.

Tips

  • Don't rely on your ISP to provide you with an email address/account. These are specific to your contract and won't transfer. Make sure you get an independent account which you use on a daily basis, even if it's GMail or Hotmail.
  • You may well be forced to send email using your chosen ISP (as is the case with Telstra), but your are not restricted receiving email from anywhere.
  • Don't be stuffed with silly addresses like jackrabbit28@gmail.com or rt2590a@useless.btinternet.net, get yourself an independent account and setup a domain called whateveryouwant.com then get yourself an email account like youname@whateveryouwant.com Simple and easy with people like GoDaddy
Hope that helps

We've got Pipex, hotmail and gmail accounts. We'll of course loose the Pipex accounts but I've already transferred the address book over to my gmail/hotmail accounts so they won't get deleted when we cancel pipex!!

You're going to miss pipex when you get here. I had that much better than anything here.

Hi,

Just to confirm you will lose your email account.

GMail is excellent and gives you about 3 GB of storage. You can email yourself copies of important documents (scanned driving licenses, references etc).

Its also free, and can be accessed from anywhere with internet access.

However, you need to recieve an invite for a GMail account.

If anyone wants an invite let me know and I'll be happy to forward one.

Regards,

Zach

Hi

You don't need to have an invite to get GMail anymore - if you follow this link you can set up an account:
http://mail.google.com/mail/signup

Hope this helps
