We are moving to Aus this september, and my younger sister who is 15 is half way through her GCSE's. Are there any schools is Melbourne where she can finish her english qualifications, or will she have to do the Australian equvilent and re-do a year? |

Hi, I can't answer the part about schools that offer GCSE's (some offer the International Baccal.) in Melbourne, I hope someone else will answer if they have the information. Most state schools in Victoria will put her in her age grouping rather than rely on the year she is in currently in. They are unlikely to ask her to re-do a year. There are no external exams in core subjects in Victorian schools until Year 12 (the final year of secondary school in Victoria). All the states are slightly different so it is worth visiting the website: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/ to look at the Australian system. Children tend not to start school until 5 or 6 years old (lots of info on the web about why Australians do this). I would guess that your younger sister would probably be put into Year 10 in Victoria. Some of my Year 10 students have arrived from the UK this year. Australian students at this age who have left for 6 months, sometimes more just slot back into their old class when they return. I think the lack of external exams means there is not so much pressure to ensure preparatory work has been covered. Good luck with the change of system! It will also depend on which secondary school she is going to. hope this helps. Send me a message if there are any other specific questions. T |

Hi, Thanks for your reply to my daughters questions but she actually posted it last year and it has been on here since then. We have been here now for 10 months and my 3 have all fitted into the aus school system really well. The 15 year old went into year 10 for 6 weeks and has been doing the first year of her VCE since February. It was all a huge worry when we were back in the UK as we felt we were taking her out of school at the worse possible time but it didn't turn out that way at all. Thanks again, Karen :waving: |
