Cheers guys for your fascinating responses, it appears that I have really opened up a debate (which is always a good thing). Although this wasn't the main thrust of my post, it's healthy to hear both sides of such an important issue.

Although it is a bummer that taxes are higher over there, it would be nice to have transparency, as I think we are all getting cheesed off with stealth taxes over here (we feel we are being treated like bloody idiots who won't notice a bit here and a bit there). It is dispiriting to work so damn hard and give so much of it away to the Chancellor (a large proportion of which going to lazy b*#!stards who can't be arsed to work and just expect a handout, oh God, shut me up someone!).

I've heard that Mornington is fab and that is the place where we would intend settling were we to come, as I haven't seen too many bad reports about it. It is a long way from the city so this could be a problem for my hubby as he is a structural engineer and would therefore probably end up having to work there. He would intend travelling by train (presuming they aren't like the sardine tins which pass as trains over here) and could therefore relax a bit on the journey. He also believes that he has a good chance of working less hours over there (got to be better than 6 days per week, 11 hour days surely!) and hopefully this would balance out the journey time. This may be rose tinted glasses but dreams are a good thing, right? Cheers

Just a quick question...

If your living in mornington, why not get a fast boat? You could get to CBD bit faster as there would not be as much traffic in your way, and could go in a straight line.

And added bonus, no tailgaters...

Good point - will look into this if we move over! Out of interest though, I was wondering how much use was made of the water for transportation. I understand that boats go from Sorrento, but are they for any other journeys?
Not very good on boats though so it would take a while to get our sea legs!

The boat from Sorrento goes to Queenscliffe. I think that Miykael was probably referring to You buying a fast boat and speeding your way to work across the bay to the city !

Anybody know the daily mooring costs for a boat in the City ?

Geez nod... IT WAS A JOKE...

I love nothing more than to spend time fine tuning some plan, but seriously I can still draw a line between a joke and a serious suggestion...

It's not really possible to use the Sorrento to Queenscliff Ferry as a commuter route. It costs A$109 return per day, would take 2Hrs 20Mins one way to the CBD and the ferry stops running at 6pm (7pm in the Summer).

It takes about 1Hr 45Mins (depending on traffic conditions) to drive the round the Peninsula to the CBD

I know some guys that moor their boats at the docklands (they live in Martha Cove apartments). After footy, a few beers, a curry on Friday, Saturday nights they crash on the boats and drive/cruise back the next day.

I think they own the moorings though - about $6K per year.

Wow

Seem to have gone off thread slightly .. :D . Although I do know a lot more about nuclear power now . Thanks guys ;)

As bigAPE says, takes about 1 hour 45 to drive.

NB you can get the train in, but still need to drive from Mornington to, (I think) Frankston to pick it up, so probably not much quicker.

Cheers

Well I have now been here 16 months and absolutely loving it.

I can't believe I have just read through my reccie report and I sound such a moaning minny!! :bashful:

Although I have not been on Britvics for a very long time now, I really did find the site so helpful. And to anyone new who reads through all the old reccie reports, my advice would be, don't take everything too much to heart.

I have never felt more at home than I do here. I don't miss England at all. We have just had our first visitors which was great, but I do not feel I want to go back at all.

I no longer miss all the silly things and foods that I moaned about in the beginning. OK OK I still get my mum to send me yorkie tea bags and yes I still hate ozzy chocolate. But hey! Everything else is so great!

We are all truly settled here. The kids schools are fantastic. We have made so many friends and everyone is friendly and helpful. It helps I guess that we live in an area which is completely saturated with English people, but that is great too. I have Australian friends too and its all good.

The outdoor life we have is fantastic. The kids do loads more sporty things. I'm playing tennis like a maniac. Even hubby has taken up a new hobby. Kayaking/fishing !!!Lol...

The shops no longer seem 'un-sophisticated'. In fact having all the individual shops, butchers, bakers, greengrocers etc.like in the uk years ago is a major bonus. The shops keepers chat and remember you. We have truly become locals in some ways.

JUST DO IT.... THAT IS MY ADVICE. ITS THE BEST THING WE HAVE EVER DONE AND WISH WE HAD DONE IT SOONER.......

Karen xxxxxxxx

(ok, someone needs to adjust my happy pills!!!!! :pmsl:
