Checkout also Glen Waverley, Wheelers Hill. The Glen is end of main train line into the city and quite a good line from what I have heard.

Notting hill is largely commercial area (modern small office blocks - not chemical or heavy industry). Blackburn and Springvale are two main roads you will here mentioned running north to south. They pass over the princes highway (dual carriageway type road but often with 3 lanes 80km per hour) and the Monash (100Km 3 to 4 lane motorway).

As Springvale passes the princes highway south bound it becomes very congested and aternate routes should be used if commuting from say Edithvale on the coast north during the week - I would use Westall road which is a new bypass which goes over the trainline. Springvale you have to cross the tracks so if a train comes you have to wait 5 or 10 minutes.

Other nice places close to the sea would be Elsternwick (cafes/restaurants and schools) the journey from here to Notting hill would not be bad as you would travel against the traffic out along the princes highway.
