Hi, I'm new to the site and was hoping someone could give me some tips on how to get a rental - my daughter and her family have been trying for three weeks to secure a rental property in Melbourne in the Epping, Bundora, Watsonia areas - but not having much success.

She is expecting a baby in 10 weeks and the container with their furniture is due 30th September - any ideas would be very welcome.

We are hoping to emmigrate on a parents visa.

First of all, welcome to the site.

Renting in Melbourne is not easy at the moment. Anything decent gets snapped up quickly. Its just a case of scouring all the real estate agents and the web and putting your name down or visiting them on the open mornings.

I dont know the areas that you mention, but it is just a case of persevere, and spend as much time on the web & and also try to get to know a couple of real estate agents, and let them know the situation. They might be a bit more helpful if thet explain the situation.

Dont worry too much about the container, It will take a couple of weeks to clear customs anyway, and the removal company on this side can store it if need be.

Hope all goes well with the the parent visa, and obviously good luck with the rental, and once again welcome to the site.

Hi there

Sorry to hear your daughter isn't having much luck in finding a rental.

My friends live in Watsonia and I know there aren't that many rentals in that area, as I looked for a place near them. So it might be a case of there aren't many to be had in the first place.

Try going a bit further out to Greensborough and Eltham - Lorraine44 can help on Eltham as she lives there and it's not too far from Watsonia.

It can take 2-4 weeks for the container to go through customs, just depends on how busy they are and as Furkew says they can store it, our stuff was in storage for a month until we found somewhere.

Hope they get sorted soon as 10 weeks will fly by and baby will be here before you know it! Good luck with getting your visas as well.

Hi there :waving:

Eltham and Greensborough has loads, and I mean loads of real estate agents! we found it best to go into each of them every single day as you never know what might turn up at short notice.
And try to arrange for private viewings if possible,, you're far more likely to get one if you're not one of 30 other couples looking on the same day!
It can be stressful (even more so if your just about to have a baby!) but it can be done, it just involves a lot of leg work!
Where are they staying at the moment?Get them to drop me a pm if they want and I'll see if I can be any help :)
