How to stress out your vet in one easy lesson

Simple. Rock up with four cats and an armful of AQIS forms for him to fill in on top of the paperwork he's already received from DEFRA. Think he had the idea that it was going to be 30 minutes or so to give each cat a pill and some Frontline and sign a few bits of paper. But with two forms per mog (all of which seem to have exactly the same information on - d'oh) asking for everything from chip numbers to what active ingedients are in the pills it took nearly an hour and a half. Oops - not a happy vet.

Word to the wise. If your vet doesn't do many pet exports it might be worth warning them. It didn't occur to us till afterwards but if they'd known in advance they could at least have had the DEFRA forms 90% filled in from their own records, maybe leaving just signature and stamps. And if they'd chosen not to do that they have known to allow extra time. Otherwise it might be better to use the vet services offered by the pet shipper as they'll certainly know what to expect.

Still, all done now and our gang will be flying south for the winter this evening.

I had a variation on this theme, turning up on Monday with my cat, ready for the final bits, but no form from Defra, as they'd only sent it out on Thursday and you can hardly expect first class post to arrive in a mere 4 days.....The vet was fantastic, shouted at and insulted everyone she needed to and charmed the rest, and finally the form was couriered yesterday and the cat went off today. And that was the part I thought was absolutely under control. Huh.

Hi pet lovers,

I'm struggling to find many posts about exporting pets and at the moment it's my biggest worry. Are you using an agent or going it alone? I've printed off the forms needed to get the quatantine permit but they are asking for an importers address in Oz which at the moment I don't have as we've not yet sorted any accomodation. I could put my employer down but don't start with them until the new year. Has anyone else had this problem?

Also, I've heard that there's a 5 month waiting list at the quarantine centres. How long have others had to wait to get their pet's in? My dogs getting on a bit now and I'm petrified about leaving him in kennels for a couple of months after we go.

Advice would be much appreciated from anyone whose already been through this.

Hi Pam

You might be better off putting this in the main section.

There are lots of people on the forum who have sent pets out recently so can give you lots of advice!

I think using an agent seems to be the best thing, Air Pets are quite good I've heard. Just make sure your container if using a wooden one has extra straps around it to make it extra secure.

Good Luck
Kim

For import form queries I reckon the simplest thing to do is stay up late one night and phone AQIS. If you're using an agent, ask them, but importer's address is probably that of the agent's office. And stay in touch with Spotswood about when they can get your pet in. We were told months and months for the four cats, but when we rang it was only about 10-11 weeks.

Thankyou both so much for replying. I feel so much better expecially about the 10 - 11 weeks. In fact I'm going to ring Spotswood right now.

Can you believe this is my biggest worry. Never mind that I'm leaving all my friends and family behind I'm just worried about my dog getting depressed!

Yes :)

BTW, we've been along to Spotswood a couple of times now to see the cats, and the animals seem to be well looked after and have decent pens. You can visit twice a week and take treats and toys, though we've got to do some serious grovelling with expensive food before we're forgiven. It's a cat thing.

Hi Pam,
Regarding your qurey about agent or going it alone...We found that we had to use an agent as it appears that most if not all airlines will not take bookings from individuals (we used www.airsupplyshipping.com - they were miles cheaper than some of the others and they were great). Make sure your agent books your dog onto a flight via Singapore as it's the quickest route.
