After many years of eating rubbush fish and chips around Australia, this Yorkshireman has opened his own in Dandenong. I am at 30 Stud road, for anybody that would like to give it a go. Everything is fresh, nothing pre cooked or frozen. Haggis, black pudding, pork pie and mushy peas, Yorkshire fish cakes along with dandellion and burdock, tizer and vimto. For 2008 I have added gammon steak, pineapple and chips. Pickled eggs will also be available from time to time, if popular, I will make more. The shop is a bit of a cafe as well for eating in, bit like the old British caf, malt vinegar and hp on the tables. The fish cosists of good, fresh fillets of Gummi Shark, real Flathead and Blue Eye Trevalla (a lovely fish from south of Tasmania, like Cod, not Trevally) The real beer batter is thin and crispy. The chips are hand produced at the shop, from the best spuds I can get. The shop is open from 4 - 9 pm weekdays and 12 - 9pm weekends, closed on Mondays ph 9794 6451 I am also seeking a business partner, someone that understands what "fresh" means, and what good fish and chips should be like, to help launch another shop. Update from Vic Thanks for all the great coments and supportive words for me chippie. Yes, I do get all my meat products from Rob's British Butshers. I do have thin, battered pork bangers, Aussie tiger prawns from North Queensland, yum! bacon butties and chip butties etc. The menu isn't extensive like the Aussie chippies, but it's all fresh. It's not on the menu, but I do make a nice pot of tea if asked, and don't mention tea bags in the shop:-) it's Tetley, leaf tea, quite strong. My theory with the shop is to keep it simple, clean with fresh produce. I would like to import Haddock and Cod from the north sea, but I would need at least 5 other shops to justify the amount I need to order. I would also like to provide British beers, or a glass of wine. I may get a license further down the track. I can host small groups of 10-12 people if booked in advance. The shop seats 16, but smaller groups are more comfortable. For those interested, my background isn't fish and chip shops, or the food industry, I worked for ABCTV for 18 years, then 10 years in the tourism industry. I have been a mad motorcycle rider for 25 years, but my pssion now is sailing. Cheers to all Vic |

Hi Vic Good luck with the new venture! We'll be over for some decent Pork Pie - fed up with eating the plastic ones from Coles! I'm sure you'll have some of our Scottish folk over for the Haggis! Kim |

Hi Vicz I was sending an email to a friend only yesterday saying how mad it sounded that we were looking forward to having 'proper' chippy chips when we go back to the UK next March. Have always said that Aus needs a proper chippy. We are in Geelong and Oh has already said, 'right we are going up there'. Good luck with your venture see you soon Cazzy |

Hi Cazzy I thought Eh By Gum, Geelong ito Dandenong s a long way to come for fish and chips, but many years ago, bored in Melbourne, I went back to Bradford, just for fish and chips! and yes, it was worth it:-) It was great to ask for scraps, and not get a strange look, as I do in Aust'. Vic |

British fish and chips? Doesn't sound like the fish and chip shops I was bought up in (my dad used to run them) IK think it should be called northern fish and chips. Good luck with it sounds fantastic  |

The nearest I've come to is flakey jakes on balcome road in Mentone...but its not brilliant. My friend from Wigan goes there ever so often she's lived here 14 years all her family have followed her out so she has no reason to ever go back to the UK....she says she wakes up in the middle of the night from dreams of soggy chips and gravy!! failing that Ahhhh! gravy in Safeways is bisto. ...another thought. I take it if you are in Dandenong you will be getting some products from Robs British butchery...have you thought of asking him? http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/08/...1412047049.html He may have a good recipe and it good be mutually beneficial from a business point of view to you both! Good luck. Louise PS do you do steak pudding?? |

Hi Vic And a decent sausage wouldn't go amiss either, whilst you are at it! OH used to be a butcher (amongst other things) and had their own sausage factory - he hasn't stopped complaining about them and the pork pies since he got out here! Perhaps we could have the next Britvics meet at your shop! Kim |

So it was YOUR fault! NOT impressed! NO MUSHY PEAS LEFT FOR ME :realmad: :realmad: The chips were great though and the fish, although not the largest piece I've ever had, was divine, as was the batter on it! Yummy   |
