Hi all you knowledgable people we are new on here and we are hoping someone can help. Our eldest son is hoping to join the Police force over in OZ when we get there next year. We know the training centre is in Glen Waverley, but we quite like the sound of Ferntree Gully. however as we have never been there we would like any recommendations/pics/views on these areas. Any help gratefully received. Cheers, Helen aka the terry's. |

I have moved this into the general section so that more people see it and hopefully give you some answers. My hairdressers husband has just had a change of career and went through his training with the police at Glen Waverley and he's now a fully fledged copper and loving it! Good luck and hope it all works out for you all. :waving: |

We are in FTG & love it here. WE often take a run up the Dandenongs which is 5 mins away or 5mins in other direction is one of the best shopping malls in Melbourne in Knox City. The thing is you have to get off the main roads to see these suburbs, if you just drive through the suburb on the main road you would more than likely say Ohh not for me thanks. In saying that Glen Waverley is just as good, you also have Wantirna & Vermont in between to. I will try & get some pics for you. |

FTG, i would say, glen waverley is an expensive suburb, i know am living here, getting more and more settled and house prices and rent going up and up , but then so is every suburb. Mind you love the facilities in glen waveley, just spent the morning with the kids at the outdoor pool :D , might drag myself there tomorrow as well :D (10 min walk from our rental) |

I don't have any photo of Ferntree Gully - but do have of The Basin (a couple of suburbs away and about 20 mins to Glen Waverley). We are 5 mins from Boronia which has heaps of facilities, a train link and a big pool complex inc. outdoor. Knox mall is 10-15 mins. Posted ImagePosted Image Posted Image |

Have lunch at The Chocolate Dragonfly cafe or The Acorn on Forest (Weds-Sun) - really nice places! The pub's (Oaktree) food isn't very exciting - but OK for a pint of Old Speckled Hen in a traditional setting :) Rachel |

It's worth mentioning the other suburbs/villages around Ferntree Gully - if they are considering FTG, The Basin is not really any further out. Yes, ideally for city life, a closer suburb would be better for quicker city access - but a lot will depend on budget. Not sure what the median house price is in Glen Waverley and surrounds - but you can still pick up 4x2 around here for $350K. There is a good entertainment complex at Knox - but if I was in my 20s, I'd rather go into the city! Rachel |

Should have put down that we are a family of six eldest of four children is Craig, 17 (he's the one that wants to be a copper), Lee is 15 (he wants to learn a trade), Maricia is 13 (she will be attending local secondary school) and last but not least Jessica who's 1. Chris (OH will be a General Plumber) and myself Helen (I do all the paperwork to do with our property maintenance business, oh and taxi driver)So as you can see a bit of an age gap, so we have to find somewhere that will please most of them. We will hoepfully be moving to OZ when the kids finish this school year in July. Did anyone have a meet and greet service when they moved there or did you just book a rental ? Any info or suggestions? Cheers, Helen. |

Hi Helen Your son will be in the training centre for only a short period, if he is accepted, it can take quite a while to get in. He will then be posted to a station that could be anywhere, although he can make a request. Both areas you mention are quite nice, but Ferntree Gully has good rail transport to the city etc. I do prefer "The Gully" as it's at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges (nowhere near Dandenong though) Where you are going to work plays a larger part in where you decide to live, spending long priods in cars getting to and from work isn't nice. Anyway, good luck and come and say hello when you get here. I run "British Style" fish and chips in Dandenong. Regards Vic |

Another option you might want to look at is either Tecoma or Belgrave. We stayed in Tecoma for just over a month before settling further into the hills in Monbulk, and its is absolutely glorious there. It is quite hilly, but lovely scenery, plenty of shops in Belgrave, and no more than 10 minutes from Ferntree, and Belgrave is linked on the same train line as ferntree. Tecoma is between Ferntree & Belgrave, and i'm almost sure they also have a train station. I must also say, that I always drive through ferntree, and It doesnt do anything for me (unless you are a car dealer  ), but last week I detoured off the main road, and it is very nice there (as Bill mentioned) some very nice areas. My son starts at St Josephs High school (all boys catholic school) in Ferntree in Jan as well which has an excellent reputaion. |

My advice would be to settle where ever you fancy and not based on you son attending the Victoria Police Academy. If you son is accepted he will most likely be required to live in at the academy for a period of around 25 weeks and on graduation he will then be sent on extended training throughout the Melbourne Metro Area and it is even possible that during his Probationary/Training period he could end up at a country station. Here is another Thread that should be of interest to you in relation to the Victoria Police, Click Here |

Thanks Irishpost for that link. Thanks everyone who's replied it's great that you are all so kind and give me your words of wisdom. One question are there many police stations in and around Ferntree Gully and the surrounding suburbs? OH is a plumber abd does property maintenance do you think he will find enough work? Again many thanks for all your responses so far, speak to you all soon. Helen. |

Here's a link to police stations in and around the area: http://www.police.vic.gov.au/content.asp?R...=&Document_ID=7 I would imagine there would be plenty of work for your OH as Ferntree Gully, Bayswater and Boronia have generally high density housing and plenty of that housing is older, established housing. Hope that helps. Rachel |
