As you probably all know, I love the idea that we have all this combined knowledge about Victoria and issues of relevance to new comers. I had hoped the BritVics Wiki would take off and become our single source of knowledge over time, but I now believe that it's just too technical for most members to get their head around. It's not even listed as a Sticky any more. My next hair-brained scheme was for a collaborative map. We could all add in our favourite beaches, parks. picnic areas, meeting points, attractions, you name it. Maybe it's the time I spent on a Kibbutz as a teen but I love the idea of us all sharing knowledge and experience. Google Maps have the ability to create your own maps using their technology, but I have been patiently waiting for them to release full collaborative tools so groups can maintain maps. Well, that time has now come and to start us off I have created the Map and added in two or three spots which I like in the area. BritVics Communal Map I have set the Map up so that anyone can edit it. This is so that there is no hassle over the Map admin having to know all your email addresses to allow you access. The downside is a malicious person might delete the entries but I think it's a minor risk versus the reward of making it as easy as possible for all BritVics members to add their ideas. You don't have to add pictures to the place markers you add but I think it's a neat idea to show what's there. If you do want to add a photo to the marker you place then you can switch to "Rich Text" mode in the edit box and add in the URL to the photo by clicking on the Picture Icon. I hope this works, because I would love to see your favourite places in Victoria Al |

Al, fantastic idea...... We haven't seen much of Victoria yet but did visit Phillip Island at the weekend, have tried to "flag" it but I must be a technophobe - no photo to attach yet, just pinpoint the place?? Hopefully someone else will have more luck than me????? Di x |

There should be an "Edit" button in the panel to the left of the Map. Clicking on that opens the map in editing mode and allows you to place markers, draw routes, etc. The icons for these will appear in the top left of the actual map. You may have to log into Google Maps, or create an account if you don't already have one. It's a two second job. |

I'll pin it for you & see how it goes. I moved the Britvics Wiki thread to "Important Threads" but I think about 80% of members only read the general discussion area. |

Pinning is almost as bad though, it's somehow out of the line of sight when people look at the normal threads. I would suggest pinning it when it starts to slip down the forum, give people a chance for it to register |

Great idea, I had a go, tried to put in a photo but none of the 4 options in Photobucket results in the photo appearing - only the text of the URL. Is it because I haven't activated my account (the email they said would be sent to me hasn't arrived so I can't click on the link in the email but can play with the map). Suggestions? Incidentally, the 4 links under a photo are: Email and IM http://s68.photobucket.com/albums/i31/ozt/...t=ListonTC2.jpg Direct Link http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i31/ozt/ListonTC2.jpg HTML Code <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i31/ozt/ListonTC2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a> and IMG Code (which I normally use to 'paste' photos eg into BV's itself: <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i31/ozt/ListonTC2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a> Guess where I put a marker? :D OzTennis :flag: |

If you can edit the Map and add a Marker then you must be logged in
Use the link to the image itself, the one that ends in .jpg A simple test is copy the link to the image and open a new tab or window in your browser. If you paste the link to the image in the address bar and navigate to the link you should see the photo, if the photo doesn't appear then the link isn't right. If it does appear then paste that link into the "Picture" pop-up in the Rich Text edit mode for the Marker description. Simple |

Hi Bigape Map is great idea....is there anyway of putting numbers on the markers corresponding with the place list so you can see what and where each place is straight away? |

Great idea and I love the photos. Funnily enough I have just created a map with all the interesting locations for our reccie. It's a very handy tool. I will certainly add any interesting places that I find on our reccie. |

I think now would be a good time to sticky this one Bill, if you don't mind. Seems to have had a good bit of air play. Cheers |
